Health Benefits from Acai Berry

It’s been awhile that i have made a review about Acai Berry as a food supplement.  But it’s only now that i tried to check more on what’s really Acai.

According to wikipedia, Acai Berry grows from an Acai Palm and grows in abundance Central and South America floodplains and swamps.  The stem and the fruit are the ones considered edible and very beneficial to our health as proven antioxidant according to its nutritional value as follows:

Most of the research to date on açaí has focused on a particular freeze-dried form referred to as Opti-açaí. This powder preparation of freeze-dried açaí fruit pulp and skin was reported to contain (per 100 g of extract) 533.9 calories, 52.2 g carbohydrates, 8.1 g protein, and 32.5 g total fat. The carbohydrate portion included 44.2 g of fiber.[2] The powder was also shown to contain (per 100 g): negligible vitamin C, 260 mg calcium, 4.4 mg iron, and 1002 U vitamin A, as well as aspartic acid and glutamic acid; the amino acid content was 7.59% of total dry weight.

Açaí has an exceptional content of fats, including oleic acid (56.2% of total), palmitic acid (24.1% of total), and linoleic acid (12.5% of total),[2] and also contains a high amount of beta-sitosterol (78-91% of total sterols).[2][3] These oil compartments in açaí fruit harbor dense contents of polyphenols such as procyanidin oligmers and vanillic acid, syringic acid, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, protocatechuic acid, and ferulic acid which were shown to degrade substantially during storage or exposure to heat.[4]

One more thing interesting about this is that Acai Juice or the Berry can be a very good supplement if one would like to shed excess pounds. Read more about it at Acai Diet Info. I checked on their availabaility in my country, it’s negative but i can feel it would be good for me. :)

Healthy Consciousness

Because of unexpected death of love ones and friends, I conclude that a regular yearly health check-up is a must.  Most adults reason out that they don’t need a doctor’s care because they don’t feel anything bad inside them.  They don’t realize that most serious illness or ailments won’t let you feel anything wrong  at an early stage but later you will realized you have it when it is already abit worst or the situation is already serious.

Somehow I wish that all types of cancer, HIV,  DB, MI’s get to us like a cold attack so that at the moment we feel we are being attacked we can just popped up a week regime of antibiotics and drink tons of water and poof….after 1 week, it’s gone!

It can’t be denied that we are now living in a world of instant foods.  Fast foods and quick food stalls sprouted all over the world like you are growing a plant or vegtable in your garden.  The tube hypnotized the mind of our children by showing them that they the best and yummy foods are the processed foods.  Many loved the happy chicken and the number is growing each day.  Breakfast Mc Do, lunch at Jollibee, dinner at KFC. wow!  I would be hypocrite if i would say i don’t love this fried chicken in many fast foods — but if i think of my health outcome — I always have the second thoughts.   But TV promoted it as malusog (healthy).  In Philippine tv advertisment about noodles that when kids ate it, they will be honor students in school.  How could it be?  When too much MSG on the food will cause dullness in a person. I wonder if the owner of that company producing the noodles believed how they promote it. To each of us, especially moms, or anyone self conscious out there, would you still believe that these type of foods are the healthy giving foods when you see a 9 to 10 year old kids already writhing in pain in bed because they are receiving dialysis?  if that age is too young and impossible, is 15 and 19 too old and enough to die?

Another Philippine TV advertisement that becomes famous lately is the promotion of eating gulay (vegetables) when they said makulay ang buhay sa sinabawang gulay (life is colorful with a bowl of vegetable soup).  I tried to watched it one daywith dimple and asked her, do you really believe that that gulay they are eating is good for you and if you eat it 3 times a day you will be healthy?  She replied, yes of course.  I then told her, that is not true.   A real vegetable soup is one that is freshly cooked and with no condiments that will harm the system of the child.  The required serving of vegetables a day for one to be healthy is 3 cups of 3 kinds of veg. Andthe tv just showed only less than 10 pcs of green leafy thing swimming in the soup.  The taste of MSG can be clearly tasted and smelled but the cut vegetables is not much.

What parents eat, kids eat.  So whatever happen to our kids, healthwise, we parents, are the only one responsible to answer doctor’s inquiries on how we fed our children.

Total change of lifestyle, exercise and regular visit to the doctor will help us prevent serious illness in the future and live a long and happy healthy life.

Coffee for Breakfast

Not just any coffee but a vegetarian coffee.  The promotion says it’s good for the body, so am into one for a try.  It costs P180.00 per pack.  Am going to post tonight the main ingredients of it.  They call it vegetarian coffee and the taste? it’s more like soy coffee.

Coffee for Me

I love the smell of coffee especially in a cold morning.  I can remember that when i was a child, i look forward to the fragrant of it because my father was a coffee drinker.  Maybe if coffee costs just like a bar of candy then possibly we could have been coffee drinker for life.   Am glad it’s not or else i would not live without a coffee to keep my blood runnin normally.

When i was in China, i had the chance to live a life as a “coffee drinker.”  It was just a chance for i know it would not be a lifetime habit.  Coffee was a like a piece of cake for me 3 to 4 times  a day.  Coffee is the liquid that warms my cold tummy especially in winter mornings.

My mom said, coffee is not good, and can be bad for health.  Well, i know, so i made this as my way of making up coffee:

- i always use a big mug. a cup is not enough. lol! but if no mug, a cup will do for the following formula:

- 1/2 teaspoon coffee

- 1 table spoon creamer

- 1/4 cup fresh milk (always)

I don’t drink coffee without milk.  So milk should always be present inside the ref or else i will pass drinking coffee until i will buy one.  And usually for a mug, a regular mug, i only put half cup water and fill it half with milk. sounds healthy huh?

Back here at home, where we have kids at home, i stopped drinking coffee (live by example).  I though craved it sometimes but i better drink it somewhere outside than inside my home.

So, how’s your coffee lifetyle?  Do you think it does you good or the opposite?

How Alcohol Affects Your Body?

Your brain.
Alcohol, even in small amounts, causes irreparable damage to brain cells; some die and others are altered. (this really sounds scary. so i better let go of my that social drinking session that happens even once in a blue moon)

Your heart.
Alcohol incrases the risk of hypertension, stroke, and damage to the heart muscle.

Your lungs.
Alcohol dperesses respiratory functions.

Your reproductive system.
In men, alcohol can damage cells in the testes, causing impotence, sterility, and possibly enlarged breasts.  In women, alcohol can cause irregular menstrual cycles and malfunctioning of the ovaries.  Alcohol has been also linked to birth defects in infants and to fetal alcohol syndrome.

Your liver.
Because your liver must filter alcohol from the blood, alcohol affects it more than any other organ of your body:

  • Excess calories in alcohol are stored as fat int he liver.
  • Functioning liver cells die from alcoholic poisoning.
  • Scar tissue replaces dead cells, causing cirrhosis.

Your immune system.
Alcohol weakens the body’s defence against infection and breast cancer.

am gonna show this article to my sister.  because i remember long time ago we fought one time she was drunk.  then when she was sober, i told her about the bad effects of alcohol in our body and she truly knew that, then she answered me, “all those bad stuff can just be read in books but won’t happen real.”  i was really angry that time. hehehee

Are YOu a Worryer?

Yeah i am. And even petty things i worry about.  Accoding to Prevention mag:

Anxiety is Destiny – Deadline loon; you stay calm as co workers lose it.  Thank your DNA: genes dictate houw much stress hormone your body releases when teh going gets rought, say scientists at the John Hopkins University School of Medicine.

I agree.  Do you know the adrenaline rush?  When our stress is high and our brain is sending warning signals to our whole system?  Then there’s the adrenaline rush.  But for some, although the house in on fire, they are still relaxed.  That’s because we don’t have the same genes.

Heart Warming, Heat-Protective

In the first human study of chocolate’s effect on blood vessel walls, researchers found those who ate flavonoid-rich  bars had improve artery stretch-ability- important for the heart health.  Make this chill-chaser using dark chocolate with guaranteed levels of flavonoids, which are lacking in cocoa mixes.  Fill a mug with 1% milk and microwave on medium for abut 1 minute.  Stir in two Dove Park Promises candies.  Garnish witha  dash of nutmeg and cinnamon stick.

Hmmm sounds like a nice drink for a very cold winter day. :)    I can remember when this news of choc being good for the heart, some people ate more than what is required that they ended up gaining more weight and sick with diabetis.

I am no chocolate candies eater but i love to keep them for give aways.  Am a choc cake lover.  :)

Having lived there for 3 years the tea i often drank which is the green tea. It is wht they serve you when you visit a home or when you eat at a restaurant (big or small). Jasmine has the sweetest fragrance of all the teas. Though they are nice to drink but i get dizzy when I go inside a tea shop because of it’s different smell. :)
