Human Lifespan

Got this in my email earlier.  A forwarded email.   Sounds funny and absurd but yet worth reflecting on -

On the first day, God created the dog and said:

‘Sit all day by the door of your house and bark at anyone who comes in or walks past. For this, I will give you a life span of twenty years.’
The dog said:
‘That’s a long time to be barking. How about only ten years and I’ll give you back the other ten?’
So God agreed..

On the second day, God created the monkey and said:

‘Entertain people, do tricks, and make them laugh. For this, I’ll
give you a twenty-year life span.’
The monkey said:
‘Monkey tricks for twenty years? That’s a pretty long time to
perform. How about I give you back ten like the Dog did?’
And God agreed.

On the third day, God created the cow and said:

‘You must go into the field with the farmer all day long and suffer under the sun, have calves and give milk to support the farmer’s family. For this, I will give you a life span of sixty years.’
The cow said:
‘That’s kind of a tough life you want me to live for sixty years.
How about twenty and I’ll give back the other forty?’
And God agreed again.

On the fourth day, God created man and said:

‘Eat, sleep, play, marry and enjoy your life. For this, I’ll give you twenty years.’
But man said:
‘Only twenty years? Could you possibly give me my twenty, the forty the cow gave back, the ten the monkey gave back, and the ten The dog gave back; that makes eighty, okay?’
‘Okay,’ said God, ‘You asked for it.’

So that is why for our first twenty years we eat, sleep, play and enjoy ourselves. For the next forty years we slave in the sun to support our family. For the next ten years we do monkey tricks to entertain the grandchildren. And for the last ten years we sit on the front porch and bark at everyone.

Make sense. right?  I was laughing after reading it.  I realized how a person’s joke in time of seriousness can lead to disaster.

Life Saving Tips – II

Here’s the continuation of  Part I

So let’s now come to Part II –

FIGHT CANCER

Although your genes and the environment play a part in your overall cancer risk, your health habits also determine whether you’ll develop this. (I really totally agree with this statement — it’s our lifestyle that can kill us sooner or make us live longer )

7.  If you smoke, quit.  Smoking is a leading cause of many types of cancer, as well as heart disease.  Talk to your doctor about nicotine replacement therapies, such as nicotine gum, patch and nasal spray, as well as Zyban, an antidepressant that research suggests can minimize withdrawal symptoms.

8.  To check for cervical cancer, women who are sexually active or over 18 should have a yearly pap test and pelvic exam.  (huh am guilty of not doing both :( And this really bugs me for a long time now that i should go and see a doctor for a test))

9.  Women should get clinical breast exams every three years between the ages of 20 and 39, and yearly if they are 40 or older.

10.  The American Cancer Society suggests that women perform breast examinations monthly, starting in their 20′s.  (i dunno how to do this :D )  “Lumps that are especially worrisome feel like wood—not round, smooth, and squishy like a grape,”  says Dr. Susan Haas, chief of the Harvard Vanguard Division of OB/GYN at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Massachusetts, USA.

11.  If you’re 40 or older, have a yearly mammogram; if you’re not yet 40, but may be at increased risk for breast cancer because of having close relatives who have had the disease, having had yourself, or having precancerous breast lesions, talk to your doctor about starting earlier.

12.  If you suspect you are at high risk for breast cancer, talk to your doctor about tamoxifen, a drug that studies suggest may reduce your risk.   It has, however, been linked to blood clots in the lungs and major veins, and uterine cancer, so you and your doctor will need to consider your overall health profile.

13.  At menopause, women at high risk for uterine cancer should have a sample of endometrial tissue examined for dysplasia (irregular cell growth that may be cancerous).

14.  To screen for colon and rectal cancer, the ACS recommends that men and women ages 50 and older undergo either a fecal occult blood test yearly and a flexible sigmoidoscopy every five years;  or a colonoscopy or double contrast barium enema every five to 10 years.  When you have any of these tests, the doctor should perform a digital rectal exam.

15.  Men ages 50 and older should undergo a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test and a digital rectal examination yearly to screen for prostate cancer.

16.  To get a sense of your cancer risk, “find out the types of cancer that occured in your family and bring this to the attention of your physician,” says Hentry T. Lynch, MD, director of Creighton Cancer Center in Nebraska, USA.

17.  Learn the health threats your job may pose, such as exposure to carcinogic materials likes abestos.  Do what you can to minimize the danger, such as wearing a safe mask when working near the substance.

Life Saving Tips for a Healthy Future – I

This is a very long article but id love to share it here maybe in several parts.  I find this very informative and am sure it will help anyone of us if not all of us in some way or the other.

This article is written by Sandra Gordon and is printed in the Health and Home Magazine Year 2004.

First tip in here is — BEAT HEART DISEASE

1.  Get your cholesterol tested if you have not in the past five years.  Ideally, your total cholesterol level should be less than 20o mg/dl; the good cholesterol should be 35 mg/dl or higher and the bad cholesterol should be less than 130 nd/dl.

2.  If your total cholesterol is more than 200, set your mind on making lifestyle changes to bring it down, says Dr Michael E.De Bakey, a professor of surgery at Baylor College of Medicine in Texas, USA.

3.  Limit fat to no more than 300 percent of calories, says the American Heart Association.  (Someone commented on this that i might have a typo error, but checking out the article it is really 300%.  Not 30%.)

4.  Get your blood pressure checked every two years if yours is normal.  If it’s high, have it checked yearly.

5.  If you have high cholesterol and want to go on the Pill, ask your doctor about formulations that can lower the LDL and raise the HDL.

6.  Post a chart illustrating emergency procedures – such as CPR and the Heimlich maneuver-on the refrigerator. You can check out # 6 information online at www.heimlichinstitute.org/

Play & Relax

Playing and relaxing for me are two different things.  When i play i don’t relax.  When i relax  it means i just do activities that will not tire me so much.  So i was upset one time when my first chinese boss told me I am lazy because i only want to play.  I was really mad but later i realized that maybe he can’t just find the right word to use.  Play for me is going out to play sports.  Relaxing for me means just staying at home and does relaxing stuff like reading, sleeping, listening to music, and maybe a quick trip to the store.  ok?  So that can comprise my relaxing day.

The kids nowadays have different view of what will relax them and what they would play.  One day Dimple asked me to consider buying her a PS3 and really i just dunno what to say. I remember i got a set of that in China but sold it to a student because i did not think my daughter would love to play it one day.  Oh well, one day…maybe one day. I will get t obuy you that.

Water Treatment for Acne or Pimples

I think water therapy is the cheapest of all natural remedies as water is free.  Except maybe if am assigned in an area where there is no free water but just the commercialized bottled water.  But now, since am home, am abundant with free water so i can do the following water treatment for my acne.

According to the author of Healing Wonder of Herbs, the following treatments can help minimize or control the growth of acne.

#1  Wash face with warm water using mild soap, 3 times a day.

#2  Steam face for 15 minuts after washing, once a day.

# 3 Avoid touching face with fingers.  Don’t prick pimples with fingers.

#4  Drink plenty of fuit juices and fresh water.

# 5 Get enough sleep at least 7-8 hours a day.

# 6 Eat less of starchy foods, sweets, chocolates and nuts.  Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables.

++++++

After reading that i felt so bad because i have a hard time following # 3, # 5, and partly # 6.

Having Enough Sleep

I was sluggish at work yesterday because i felt sleepy.  I do not have to wonder why am sleepy because for the past days i just have an average of 5 hrs sleep at night.  I am lucky when i have 7 hrs.  When i was still at work at 5:30 pm i found myself yawning.  I was sleepy and yeah also tired.  So when i got home, cleaned myself and hit the bed.  I was already drowsing to sleep at 7 pm.  I planned for the clock to wake me up at 10:30 to do some online stuff but no one woke me up.  So i ended up waking up at 6 this morning.  6 am in a normal morning?  That’s good because usually i have the clock wake me up at 6:15 or 6:30 so that i won’t miss the devotional at 7:30.

Now i really feel refreshed and better.  I don’t feel any body pains.  So therefore, having enough sleep is important to a healthy well-being.

Mesothelioma Cancer Help

There are many cancers that we know in this world and Mesothelioma Cancer is one of the worst.  Mesothelioma cancer is caused by abestos and affects the serious membranes that surround many vital organs of our body. If you have this illness or anyone of your friends or in the family has this serious illness then check out this Mesothelioma site.   The site can be a source of help.  So far at my end, i still haven’t seen anyone with Mesothelioma cancer case.   I have only seen but breast cancer, lung cancer, bone cancer patient and i think they all would feel the same especially at the worst stage of their illness.

Yeast Infection

I come across the term while blog hopping though the term is not alien to me but the deep meaning of it i still have to find it.   So while uploading pics, i tried to google yeast infection and this is what i gathered.

What is yeast infection?
A yeast infection is  also known as candidiasis, and it’s the name for a common infection caused by a yeast called candida albicans (a type of fungus).  It usually occur in warm, moist parts of our body such as the mouth and moist skin.  Yeast infections usually occur in warm, moist parts of the body, such as the mouth and moist areas of skin and most likely the vagina. When they cause an infection in the vagina, it is known as vulvovaginal candidiasis.  In other words, normally yeast as fungus lives in the vagina in small numbers.  But when pH is altered they grow up into big big numbers.

What are the symptoms?
- itching and irritation in the vagina
- redness, swelling, or itching of the vulva (the folds of skin outside the vagina)
- a thick, white discharge that can look like cottage cheese and is usually odorless, although it might smell like bread or yeast
- pain or burning when urinating or during sex

Is Vaginal yeast infection treatable?  Yes

Can it be prevented?  Yes and there are some simple ways to be done to prevent having an infection -

-Wear cotton, not nylon, underwear, and avoid tight-fitting pants and panty hose.
- Change out of a wet swimsuit right away.
- Avoid douches and feminine sprays, scented toilet paper, and deodorant tampons.

What i like to note is that — yeast infection can happen to any girl and is not sex related.  Although it can be spread to your partner.  Guys can also have the infection but is not called vagina yeast infection but is called – balanitis.
