The Importance of Air

According to NEWSTART, a human being can survive several days without food, a few days without water but only a few minutes without air.  This one element is very important to life.  Without air a person will die and can have permanent brain damage within 5 minutes.

Spending long hours in poorly ventilated rooms can result in drowsiness and make it difficult to concentrate.  The reason?  Too little oxygen in the air.  Shallow breathing and blockages in the respiratory tract can make your entire system operate sluggishly.

Ways to get more air into our lungs:

  1. Open your windows and let in the fresh air!
  2. Exercise in the fresh air.  This will strengthen your breathing muscles and increase your lung capacity.
  3. Practice good posture habits.  Sit up straight with your shoulders back.  This will increase your ability to breath more deeply.
  4. Concentrate on breathing more deeply.  Consciously take several deep breaths.  This will clear your brain and cause you to be more alert and feel more alive. :)

I wish everyone a nice day today!

WARNING on Sunlight

Small amount of sunlight are wonderful.  Large am0unts are dangerous! Limit your exposure to the sun to five minutes per day at first if you are fair skinned, 15 minutes a day for darker – skinned individuals.  Your exposure to the sun can be gradually increased.   A goal of 20-30 minutes is a realistic goal for most people.  Never allow yourself to burn.  Remember, wet skin burns faster than dry skin.  Ultraviolet rays of the sun can reflect off snow, sand and water, greatly increasing your exposure.

For years, sunlight has been known as a mediator of life.  We know today that it can be healing or destructive;  it can be the kiss of life or the kiss of death, depending on how we use it.  Enjoy the sun sparingly and it will increase your vitality and good health.

Benefits of Sunlight

Sunlight gives life to earth because it provides heat, light and food.   But what can sunlight do for you personally?

Sunlight can kill germs and can actually strengthen our body’s resistance to infection. That is why it is important to sun and air our blankets, quilts and other items that are not washed often.  Open up the windows of your house as much as possible as this will allow the sunlight to kill bacteria in your home as well.

Sunlight therapy is seen to increase some types of immunity. White blood cells are increased, especially lymphocytes.  Antibodies are increased.  These effects can last up to three weeks.  A ten-minute exposure to the sun one to two times a week can greatly reduce incidence of colds.

The theory of sunlight therapy is a very controversial issue – since suppressor T-cells activity is increased and natural killer-cell activity is suppressed.  This can be beneficial in conditions like multiple sclerosis and certain allergic conditions.  However, the risk of skin cancer is increased and some latent viruses are activated.

The important factor to remember is the amount of time one spends in the sun is very crucial. The idea is to have limited exposure and as with other good ideas, use in moderation.

The sunlight can increase your blood’s ability to carry and deliver oxygen, thus increasing your energy and endurance.

Unfiltered sunlight on the skin converts cholesterol in the skin into vitamin D.  This process can cause a significant lowering of your cholesterol level.
