The Espanya Dream

Being born in a country founded by Magellan, a Spaniard warrior, made me dream to see Spain someday.  Being colonized by Spanish for years, I understand that we would have many traits in common although they are more rich in history as the Kingdom of Spain was born ahead before a Philippines was discovered.  Now I am wondering how will I work out this dream?

I have kept a small notebook with me that contains a list of the countries I wanted to visit and Spain is one of them.  Though Spain is part of the European Union, I don’t have plans to visit the country during my group backpacking plan in Central Europe. Lately, I met a friend online who is from there and she speaks a little English.  I guess the reason she made friends with me was to practice speaking English.  What I love is that, though she has few words but yet she is so quick to catch up that in the two months we become friends, she can speak really better now.

I will surely ask the assistance of a travel agent when booking for this Spain holiday.  If it is possible to see nearby places before proceeding to Spain, then it would be a great idea.  I have begin listing down places to visit there, per recommendation by Antonia.

This is Santiago de Compostela Cathedral
one of my must see there

Spain’s number one religion is Catholic so I have to expect to see many huge cathedrals.  I love Cathedrals and Churches and I hope I can grab a postcard of them to be swapped with collectors from around the world.  Another must see also is The Great Mosque of Cordoba which is considered as a wonder of the medieval by both Muslims and Christians.

Spain has a large coastline that features the most beautiful beaches that you could find in Europe.  That is the reason why many tourists decides to come to Spain.

Visitors enjoy water sports and other beach activities and the horse-riding is one of the most popular activities because it is what they recommend as the best way for sightseeing. Families and particularly children love amusement parks and theme parks in Spain, such as the Tivoli World Amusement Park, which hosts a spectacular Flamenco display, a Spanish cultural trademark. Spanish zoos and wildlife parks are equally popular among families, such as the Dolphin World, the Sea Life Center and a crocodile park.

I will also try to visit the villages and befriend village people to have a real feel of the culture and their practices.  A month vacation there sounds short but I hope I can make up the best of it.
So why not make Spain as your holiday vacation?

Lake Apo: Ideal Place for R & R

Today is the last day of the very long weekend.  After two days of very busy weekend, the next 2 days were spent here.  I often thought of going R & R in The Timeless Place, the Lake Apo in Barangay Guinoyuran, Valencia City.

Sunrise.
Great start to thank God for the wonderful rest of the night and the beautiful morning.

Gentle morning sun rays reflection in the country style living room

Yesterday, the phone rang, and Ma’am Rose asked me if I would like to go to Lake Apo for the Adventist Health Professionals Convention this coming weekend.  That’s another long weekend, she said.  I thought for awhile. And since I promised myself that I will be going back to see the sunset, then this would be a nice chance.  But when she told me that I should bring a tent, I began to get worried.  I don’t have any tent.  I still do not have any idea whom in the group have a tent like kelty tents which is a an ideal type for outdoor activities.  Tent is a must for this activity because there’s no guestroom there that can accommodate large number of people.

Lake Apo is a landlocked water that made me tagged it as a “hidden paradise” in Valencia City.   If I will join the AHP then this would be the second time i’ll see the place.  The place is great to enjoy with few people.  I have already say yes to Ma’am Rose, but If it will be in conflict with my mama duties, then I might back out.

Actually, I wanna go back with them because they can bear with my fears and shyness. =)

Lake Apo is a very picturesque place, so don’t go there without your camera if you have one.  But if you have none, then go with an abundant love for nature and the environment.  Then surely, you will appreciate the place.

Another Simple Way to Make You Feel Young

We are young once and if we look at our skin and count our number of years, it can’t really be denied that we are off to the golden years.  But that is still too far away for me but I know I am going there.

I love to do scrapbooking and I only learned it online.  But because of less time to do scrapbooking, I did not improve my layouts.  I admire so many people in their 50′s and above who is very much able to make adorable scrapbooking designs. They love what they are doing. And that is a very important means of making one feels young all the time. By doing what you love doing and doing something that will make one happy.

Thanks to Scrapbooking for letting me discover another wonderful site that I will surely love to explore and try out when I have many free times in my hand.  But I will try using it this weekend.  I will make a belated layout for my daughter’s 14th birthday last Monday.

Suicide By Sugar by Dr. Nancy Appleton

This article was shared to me through email.  It is really a good read.  Not just for reading actually, but something to follow after reading.  Thank you Pastor Sam for sharing.

===========

The phrase “addictive white powder” probably makes you think of illegal drugs. Add sugar to that addictive group. Americans consume vast quantities — and suffer withdrawal symptoms when they don’t get it. In fact, animal studies indicate that sugar is more addictive than cocaine.

Excess sugar has been linked to obesity, cancer, diabetes and dementia. What to do…

SUGAR, SUGAR EVERYWHERE

In the US, the average person consumes about 142 pounds of sugar each year, the equivalent of 48 teaspoons a day. Of that amount, 74 pounds is “added” sugar — about 23 teaspoons every day. Added sugars are defined as those sugars added to foods and beverages during processing or home preparation, as opposed to sugars that occur naturally.

People who want to cut back on sweeteners usually start with the sugar bowl. They spoon less sugar on their breakfast cereal, for example, or use a sugar substitute in their coffee.
This doesn’t help very much. The vast majority of added sugar in the diet comes from packaged foods, including foods that we think are healthful.

For example, eight ounces of one brand of sweetened apple yogurt contains 44 grams of sugar, according to the nutrition facts label. Four grams equals one teaspoon, so that?s 11 teaspoons of sugar. (You cannot tell from the label how much sugar is from the yogurt, how much is from the apples and how much is added sugar.)

Most of the added sugar that we consume comes from regular soft drinks (there are about 10 teaspoons of sugar in 12 ounces of nondiet soda), candy, pies, cookies, cakes, fruit drinks and milk-based desserts and products (ice cream, sweetened yogurt).

If you look carefully at ingredients labels, which list ingredients in order of quantity, you will see that the first two or three ingredients often are forms of sugar, but many have innocuous-sounding names, such as barley malt, galactose and agave nectar. Other forms of sugar include honey, maple syrup, corn syrup, corn sweetener, dextrine, rice syrup, glucose, sucrose and dextrose.

DANGEROUS IMBALANCE

The difference between sickness and health lies in the body’s ability to maintain homeostasis, the proper balance and performance of all of the internal functions. Excess sugar disturbs this balance by impairing immunity, disrupting the production and release of hormones and creating an acidic internal environment.

It’s not healthy to maintain a highly acidic state. The body tries to offset this by making itself more alkaline. It does this, in part, by removing calcium and other minerals from the bones.

Result: People who eat too much sugar experience disruptions in insulin and other hormones. They have an elevated risk for osteoporosis due to calcium depletion. They also tend to have elevated levels of cholesterol and triglycerides (blood fats), which increase the risk for heart disease.

BREAK THE CYCLE

A sweet tooth is not the same as a sugar addiction. We’re genetically programmed to enjoy sweets on occasion. It becomes an addiction when sweet foods make you crave even more sugar and your consumption increases over time… you experience withdrawal (in the form of mood changes, such as irritability or feeling “down”) when you briefly go without sugar… and you experience intense cravings when sweet foods aren’t available.

Sugar, like drugs and alcohol, is addictive because it briefly elevates levels of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that produces positive feelings. When a sugar addict doesn’t eat sugar, serotonin declines to low levels. This makes the person feel worse than before. He/she then eats more sugar to try to feel better — and the vicious cycle goes on.

For the best chance of breaking a sugar addiction, you need to ease out of it. This usually is more effective than going cold turkey. Once you?ve given up sugar entirely and the addiction is past, you’ll be able to enjoy small amounts of sugar if you choose — although some people find that they lose their taste for it. How to break the habit…

Divide sugar from all sources in half. Do this for one week. Examples: If you?ve been drinking two soft drinks a day, cut back to one. Eat half as much dessert. Eat a breakfast cereal that has only half as much sugar as your usual brand, or mix a low-sugar brand in with your higher-sugar brand.

Limit yourself to one sweet bite. The second week, allow yourself to have only one taste of only one very sweet food daily. Then push the dish away. This might be ice cream, sweetened cereal or a breakfast muffin. That small “hit” of sugar will prevent serotonin from dropping too low, too fast. This is important because low serotonin can make you feel so poorly, physically and emotionally, that you’ll want to self-medicate with more sugar. After about two weeks with little or no sugar, your internal chemistry — including levels of serotonin and other neurotransmitters — will stabilize at a healthier level.

Eat fresh fruits and vegetables. These foods help restore the body’s natural acid-alkaline balance. This will help reduce sugar cravings and promote better digestion. Be sure to substitute fresh fruits for juices. Whole fruit is better because the fiber slows the absorption of sugars into the bloodstream. The fiber also is filling, which is why few people will sit down and eat four oranges — the number you would need to squeeze to get one eight-ounce glass of juice.

Helpful: All fruits are healthful, but melons and berries have less sugar than other fruits.

Some Facts about the Liver

Thank you Pastor Sam for sharing this with me.  This was sent to me by email and it was composed in a very interesting way.  Not the usual article type, but in a letter type that everyone who reads it will truly understand as it is simplified.

Here’s a letter from our liver to us:

THE LIVER SAID: LET ME TELL YOU HOW MUCH I LOVE YOU IN 9 WAYS.

1.I store the iron reserves you need, as well as a lot of vitamins and other minerals. Without me, you wouldn’t have the strength to carry on!

2.I make bile to help digest your food.  Without me, you’d waste away to nothing.

3.I detoxify poisonous chemicals you give me, and that includes alcohol, wine and drugs (prescribed and over-the-counter) as well as illegal substance.  Without me, your “bad” habits would kill you.

4.I store energy, like battery, by stack piling sugar (carbohydrates, glucose and fat) until you need it.Without me, the sugar level in your blood could fall dramatically and you’d go into a coma.

5.I make the blood that got your system going  even before you were born. Without me, you wouldn’t be here!

6.I  manufacture new proteins that your body needs to stay healthy  and grow. Without me, you wouldn’t grow properly!

7.I remove toxins from the air, exhaust smoke and chemicals you breath. Without me, you’d be poisoned by pollutants.!

8.I make clotting factors that stop the bleeding when you accidentally prick yourself. Without me, you’d bleed to death!

9.I defend you against the germs going into your body all the time. I take those cold germs, flu bugs and other  germs you encounter, and knock them dead—or at least weaken them.  Without me, you’d be a sitting duck for every infection known to man.

That’s how much I love you, but do you love me? Let me tell you some easy ways to love me, your liver.

Don’t drown me in beer, alcohol or wine. Even one drink is too much for some people and could scar me for life.

Watch those drugs! All drugs are chemicals, and when you mix them up without a doctor’s advice you could create something poisonous that could damage the body.

I scar easily . . . and those scars, called “cirrhosis”, are permanent. Medicine is sometimes necessary. But taking pills when they are not necessary is a bad habit. All those chemicals can really hurt a liver.

Be careful with aerosol spray!  Remember, I have to detoxify what you breathe in, too. So when you are cleaning with aerosol cleaners, make sure the room is ventilated, or wear a mask.

That gives double for bug sprays, mildew sprays, paint sprays and all those other chemical sprays you use. Be careful what you breathe!

Watch what gets on your skin. Those insecticides put on trees and shrubs not only kill bugs. They can get to me through your skin and destroy my cells, too. Remember, they’re all chemicals. Cover your skin with gloves, long sleeves, a hat and mask every time insecticides are in the air or if you’re handling them.

Don’t eat too much fatty food! I make the cholesterol your body needs, and I try to make the right amount. Give me a break. Eat a good, well-balanced nourishing diet. If you eat the right stuff for me, I’ll really do my stuff for you.

Warning:

I can’t and won’t tell you I’m in trouble until I’m almost at the end o my rope. . . and yours.

Remember: I am a non-complainer. Overloading me with  drugs, alcohol and other junk can destroy me. This may be the only warning you will ever get.

Take my advice, Please!

·         Check me out with your doctor.

·         Blood screening tests can identify some troubles.

·         If ‘m soft and smooth, that’s good. If I’m hard and bouncy, that could mean trouble.

·         My  life and yours depends on how you treat me.

·         Now you know how much I care for you. Please treat me with tender loving care.

–Your silent Partner and ever-loving lover . . . LIVER
